How soon should we book?
For most DJ's in Christchurch, I recommend about 9 months. For me personally, I recommend approx. 12-18 months in advance to have a much better chance of being available for your date. I'm usually fully booked or close to fully booked for the wedding season by around 9 months out. I occasionally have the odd Saturday available and a bunch of Fridays, but generally not many. But you may get lucky booking within 6 months and me having that 1 date available. One thing to note is that I limit how many weddings I do in any given month because of how much work they take - I don't want to short change any of my couples by overloading on weddings.
How do we know if you're any good?
Check my google reviews. Check DJ4You Christchurch's google reviews. Take a look at my instagram @djm0tiv. Ask your vendors. Ask on NZ Wedding Facebook pages. Meet me in person for a no obligation chat where I'll shout coffee and you can ask whatever questions you like of me. Lots of people know me and know how I work, so you don't have to simply take my word for it - and the same goes for any of the DJ's in Christchurch you're looking at ... you should check and make sure we fit your vibe and vision. Have I done every event absolutely perfect? No, but I set high standards and I try to make them as perfect as I possibly can.
Can we come and see you play?
Not at a private event. But you can check out my instagram which has some samples and I occasionally play clubs, which you're welcome to come and see if I happen to be playing around the time of you enquiring. I also have a bunch of mix-samples which I can send out. The issue with all of those is that they may not contain the type of music you personally want or like; and because I tailor music to the people in front of me, what I'm playing is for them ... rather than anyone watching or listening. But if you can keep that in mind, no worries.
Can we choose all the music?
Yes absolutely, but I do recommend leaving some room for me to "work the crowd". A big part of my job is to control the dance floor and move people on and off the dance-floor and control the energy in the room. See, people don't generally dance for 3-4 hours without a break, so the idea is to pick and choose music wisely so that I can create natural breaks and reduce the chance of burning people out too early. If I burn people out too early, there's a risk they will all be sitting down by the end of the night or worse, leaving early. But, chat to me if you have any concerns about what this looks like.
What is your booking and payment policy?
I have a simple online agreement that I send out and you'll have 2 weeks to get that signed and back to me (it's virtual so can be done all online). Once we've both signed it, I issue an invoice requiring a 25% deposit to be paid within 2 weeks to lock in the booking. The balance is due 2 weeks before your event. All payments are receipted, and you will get access to an app that will also contain all of your financial info.
What is this app?
Everyone who books gets access to a special app which contains their agreement, financial information and the ability to build your music choices - and we're one of the few DJ's in Christchurch, let alone New Zealand using this app. It's integrated with Spotify and Apple Music, so you have access to all of their music to help choose the songs for your dance floor or ceremony for instance. Additionally, the app also has a bunch of questionnaires that I've designed that help me work out what music is most likely going to work for you and your guests. You can give me a list of Must Play, Play if Possible and almost more importantly, Do Not Play songs.
Do you charge the same for parties as you do for a wedding?
My prices are comparatively similar, but different types of events require different amounts of effort and support. Parties generally require much less planning and preparation from a wedding. A wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event for most people, so I spend a lot of time trying to ensure that every aspect of what I do gets my very best effort. I care about how good a job I do for people - regardless of what type of event it is. BUT, this is why there is some variance in my pricing between event types.
Do you mix music and why is it important?
I know this isn't actually a FAQ but I did think it was important to answer this question because the answer firstly is most definitely yes. The reason why mixing is important is obvious with most parties, it's about keeping the dance floor moving - but the same applies to weddings and corporate events. If you want the type of dance floor that is energetic and jumping all night, you'll stand a much better chance of achieving this if your DJ can mix and not just mix, but mix in and out of the parts of songs that keep the crowd moving as much as possible. Not all of the mobile DJ's in Christchurch mix - so if that's what you want, then ask them.
Your Questions?
I've tried to answer as many of the most common questions as possible, without making this page super long - so if your question isn't answered, flick me a question and I'll come back ASAP. Even if your question is specifically about what I do, as one of the more experienced DJ's in Christchurch New Zealand, I'm happy to help share what I know.
